Our panel of industry experts will be looking at some of the many challenges we face and discussing any opportunities, in the coming months and beyond, with topics including:

Clients - How are our clients reacting, will corporate policy dictate the speed of recovery, with travel bans or forced attendance? Are there different industries more risk adverse? And if hybrid is the new normal, will this impact client budgets?

Industry Landscape - How will our industry react to this, with businesses going into administration, possible mergers and acquisitions? Will this lead to bigger businesses or will smaller bespoke businesses rise up? Will we see the emergence of more hotel/venue representation companies, as they consolidate costs? And what impact will we see on our freelance community?

People - With so many businesses and people being affected by the pandemic and lock-down, and the government job retention scheme ending at the end of October and the possible threat of mass redundancies, how will this impact our industry?

Normal - When do we realistically see a return to the old normal and live events? Will sustainability have to be put on hold or more of a priority than ever? What positives can we take from the last 6 months? And what opportunities are there?

12.00-13.00 The Impact of Technology on Events

Caroline Moran – Clear (host)
Chris Haddow – Swapcard
Keith Forester – MTS Live
Gemma Hill – Manchester Metropolitan University

Our panel will look at the impact of technology and the journey from the introduction of virtual events during lock-down, to the growth of hybrid events as we start to emerge, and the hopeful return to live events in the not too distant future.

Who had heard of Zoom before Covid-19? How have businesses and technology pivoted to meet the new demand for virtual event. Moving from virtual to hybrid, what technology is needed? Live camera, streaming systems, audio & video equipment, presentations.

What technology is required from venues to support hybrid events? Internet band-width, Broadband infrastructure, AV equipment and Collaborative partnerships?

How do we make a virtual event engaging? Exciting content like motion graphics, presentations, video, pre-records, engagement through social media, using interactive apps such as Mentimeter or Slido to engage with live and virtual audiences at the same time.

What are the opportunities with virtual and hybrid events? If we start thinking on a larger scale, with an international reach and global audiences.

Leigh Cowlishaw – HBAA

With the natural concerns of Coronavirus, and subsequently public concerns of meeting in person, corporate travel bans, government imposed local lock-downs and the absolute need to ensure our events and venues are safe, how do we build confidence for our industry?

What measures can venues put in place to ensure the safety of events and attendees? And what are the cost implications? And what are the implications in terms of liability, venue contracts, force majeure, cancellation policies and insurance? How can venues and event planners work closer and better together?

Our panel will be tackling these questions and helping to provide us with options and opportunities to help our industry recover.
